Shaving Day Extravaganza!
Well folks, like when we were all just young children dreaming of the day we would be blessed with a fine stache and it felt like the day would never come, so has it been with Shaving Day. But, like That Fateful Day when you looked in the mirror and saw those first few whiskers, the long awaited time has crept up on us with ninja-ish sneakiness. In a mere 23 hours we will mark Detroit’s first ever Mustaches for Kids growing season with a party filled (we hope) with hairless faces newly started on their journey toward that mythical state known as “Mustachioed”. Please help us realize our dreams of a crowd of valiant men helping children though the awesome power of their facial hair by coming to Jacoby’s to throw your stache in the ring, or even just to lend moral (and monetary) support.
Remember, it’s called Shaving Day for a reason- if you want to grow with us please show up clean shaven so we can take pictures of your lovely, boyish faces for the internet. We may have professionals on hand to assist with the razoring, but so far it’s only an unsubstantiated rumor. If that rumor is confirmed, we will let you know on this site before the event tomorrow night. And to assist you in your efforts to spread the stache love far and wide, we will have beautifully crafted buttons available for growers and supporters alike. The growers get them for free and supporters pay the low, low cost of $.50. These buttons are designed by the very talented Ray Schelhas, so you can thank him for all his hard work- you’ll know who he is because he looks like a dark haired version of this guy.
We’ll keep you updated with any late breaking developments right here, so stay tuned and keep stachey!

Black Lotus Malty, Hoppy Goodness Saves the Day
Our informational meeting at Black Lotus Brewery last Thursday was a resounding success. And by resounding success I mean that one grower came, one possible grower’s girlfriend showed up, Jay talked to everyone in the bar (twice) and Meghan drank beers. However, our mustachioed message was heard by many and hopefully some of them are here checking us out. We aren’t taking the low turn out too hard though; we’re assuming that it’s a result of everyone being too well informed.
Those of you that couldn’t make it don’t know what you missed, the beer really is great. I reccomend getting there for the birthday brew before it’s gone.

Facebook? What’s That?

Maybe you’ve heard of it. I have no idea what this whole thing is about, but apparently my co-organizer and personal mustache groomer Meghan has started a group there for those of you involved in such things. Check it out here. You’ll be able to see other growers and supporters, post pics, and get updates on events. So head over, join up, rock out and stache on!

Remember Knight Rider?
Well, I’m not sure if it’s related, but the Knight Foundation has some funds up for grabs for m4k chapters in the communities it serves, and luckily we’re one of them. And I’m not talking small change here, I’m talking 75 grand for the organization that raises the most money and another 75 thousand for the one with the most growers. There are 2nd and 3rd place prizes too. Plus, if we raise $10,000, they’ll match it. So if you needed any more motivation besides the stachey glory, there it is. Now if we could only get them to throw in a talking car…

Gentlemen, start your Stache!
Now that we have a charity, it’s time to talk stache. Our season kicks off November 13 with Clean Shaven Day, we’ll let you know when and where. More importantly though, before we can shave, you have to sign up. I know it’s a bit intimidating- facing the the ridicule of your friends, the adoring stares of the ladies, but think about the children. So if you’re willing to man it up and pitch in, just email us at m4kdetroit@gmail.com.
If you aren’t sure, you can sign up in person at our very informative informational meeting on Wednesday, October 29. Keep an eye out here for the place and time. Just let us know in an email that you’re planning on coming. Family, friends and anyone else can come; these are the people you’re going to be hitting up for cash, so make sure they’re as involved as possible. Plus it’s going to fun, I hope- er i mean, I promise.

There’s no I in Mustache, but there is a D in Donors Choose
Fellow stache supporters, I’m proud to announce that this year will be growing for Donors Choose, a fantastic charity that will keep our funds local while allowing individual growers to determine where their hard won donations will go. Here’s a little blurb about them:
“DonorsChoose.org was born in the teachers’ lunchroom of a Bronx public high school where Charles Best, our founder, taught social studies for five years. He and his fellow teachers were spending lots of their own money on basic supplies but still seeing their students go without the books, art supplies, field trips, and other resources needed for a rigorous education. So they started a nonprofit website where any public school teacher can post a resource request for their students, and donors from all walks of life can choose the projects they want to support.
Teachers’ requests range from basic stuff like “Dictionaries for my Classroom” ($200) to really imaginative ideas like “Therapeutic Horseback Riding for my Disabled Students” ($800). Check out our search page and you can see that there are lots of live requests in your communities and/or projects that match a personal interest, like yoga, baseball, autism, or Dr. Seuss.
Your mustache sponsors can give as little as $5 to the classroom project of their choice, and 100% of their donations go to the projects. Then they get a thank-you letter and photographs from the students and teacher they (and YOU) supported!”
If that isn’t enough for you, check out the site at DonorsChoose.org. If you do, you my notice a small button in the upper right corner that Mustches for Kids ‘08. That’s right, Donors Choose is all over this hairy fundraiser like beer foam on a sweet stache.
